Asheville sits in a hardwood bowl, which is beautiful in October and a lot of work in November. Depending on elevation, leaf drop around here runs from about mid-October through early December, and a wooded lot can hold enough leaf litter to smother a fescue lawn if it sits over the winter.
Wet leaves matted on grass block light and trap moisture against the crown, which is how you get bare, moldy patches showing up in March. On sloped properties the same litter also slides into drainage lines and gutters and sends water where you do not want it.
For most properties one thorough pass once the majority of leaves are down is enough. Heavily wooded lots usually do better with two passes, one mid-season and one at the end, so nothing sits long enough to do damage.

Most properties do best with a cleanup once the majority of leaves are down, which around Asheville is usually mid-November into early December depending on your elevation. Do you clean up after storms?+
