The single most common thing we see on properties around Asheville is shrubs that get sheared at the wrong time of year and then never bloom. Spring bloomers like azalea, rhododendron, forsythia and mountain laurel set next year's flower buds in early summer, so cutting them back in late summer or fall removes exactly the growth you wanted flowers on.
Those get pruned right after they finish blooming. Summer bloomers and most evergreens are the opposite and are best cut back in late winter while they are dormant. Crepe myrtle gets its own mention here, because the hard topping people do to them every February is not pruning and does long term damage to the structure of the tree.
